Former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili has been stripped of his Ukrainian citizenship by Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko, leaving him stateless.
Saakashvili was president of Georgia until 2013, fleeing Georgia amid charges of abuse of office which he claims are politically motivated. Saakashvili was appointed Governor of Oddessa by Poroshenko in 2015 and was also granted Ukrainian citizenship (losing his Georgian citizenship). However, in November 2016, Saakashvili resigned from this post, blaming the Poroshenko regime for its failure to tackle corruption.
The Ukrainian authorities stated that Saakashvili was stripped of his citizenship after supplying false information regarding corruption charges in Georgia when applying for citizenship. However, many regard this as an attempt by Poroshenko to silence his latest critic.
